Fun Fact:
Also called common boxwood or European boxwood. Buxus sempervirens is an evergreen shrub or small tree that typically grows up to 3 to 30 feet (1-9 m) tall, with a trunk up to 8 inches (20 cm) in diameter. Arranged in opposite pairs along the stems, the leaves are green to yellow-green, oval, 1.5–3 cm long, and 0.5–1.3 cm broad. The shrub has hermaphrodite flowers which are inconspicuous but highly scented, greenish-yellow, with no petals. The flowers are insect pollinated and the fruit is a three-lobed capsule containing 3-6 seeds. Due to its slow growth, the wood is very hard and despite its narrow trunk size the shrub’s wood is utilized to make musical instruments and small tools.
