The genus Ilex consists of 300-350 species of evergreen or deciduous trees and shrubs that are indigenous throughout the world except for Australia. Ilex aquifolium was introduced into North America ad bears fruit more plentifully than the American species, L. opaca. Leaves are evergreen and aculeate (spiny-toothed). Flowers occur in late spring. They are small, imperfect with four rounded white petals, occurring on short stalks at the base of previous year’s leaves. Trees are dioecious. Fruit is a red berrylike drupe. Bark is grey and typically smooth. Leaf spray are used for Christmas decorations.
