Pears belongs to the rosaceous family and are considered a close relative to the apple. Pears are mainly grown in China, Europe and the United States and ranks in the top five consistently for fruit productions. Commercially pears are divided into two major groups: European and Asian pears. Pears have hermaphrodite flowers, polypetalae and perigynics stamens and are classified according to their number of carpels (pistils) and fruit size. Pears with small fruits that have two carpels known as Asian pears, whereas large fruits with five carpels are European, and fruits with three to four carpels are hybrids. Currently pears are propagated by grafting, where the graft is adapted against stresses such as soil alkalinity, drought, cold. However recent advances achieved with the pear sequencing genome project will hopefully provide new opportunities for developing new tree varieties more tolerant to biotic and abiotic stresses. Nutritionally pears have value with reasonable amounts of vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, and C and minerals like sodium, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, manganese, copper, iron and zinc.
